While everything is still new and still coming together, I had the chance to spend a few days getting to know my surroundings and to look for a job. The pictures here were mostly taken in Zona Colonial, where Christopher Columbus first landed, and where the first "white people" settled down in the New World. The old architectural structures are truly amazing and the history behind this city is something you cannot even fathom. In general the history behind the whole island, Hispaniola, which holds two very different countries, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, is a long and very multicultural one, encompassing many aspects of Spanish and French colonialism here long ago. Therefore remnants of its past are situated all over the city and especially in Zona Colonial. I have also taken pictures from other areas of the city and outside the city showing some colorful streets, national pride, and the beautiful beach of Juan Dolio.
Speaking of national pride, this weekend is also The D.R.'s independence celebration so parades and the closing of Carnival will be going down a few blocks from me. Those pics will hopefully be the next I will put up along with pictures from the school I work at! Yes, I am a teacher!!! You may now officially call me Mr. Malka. Anyway, I want to go wonder around a little bit and see what is going on around me. I'll keep you posted and will put up some more pics when I get back home.
